cLOUDDEAD - Dead Dogs Two (Board of Canada Remix)

Animation by Stephen Smith

This promotional music video comes from Stephen Smith, a music video artist based in London. On youtube, Stephen explains that this video was originally intended as an experiment in syncing and representing the audio and vocals visually. The song itself is completely stunning and the video’s seemingly minimalist style couples it perfectly.

Check out more of Stephen’s work here.

And go buy cLOUDDEAD’s “Ten" if you haven’t already. I think it may be one of the last perfect albums ever made.

"Slow Bob In The Lower Dimensions" - Henry Selick, 1991

This terrific short film from Henry Selick was originally supposed to serve as a pilot for a series that would eventually air on MTV or Viacom or whatever. However, it only ended up playing on MTV’s “weird fucking cartoons” block (liquid television) through the early 90’s. The fact that MTV or Viacom never picked up the show is travesty, especially when considering how Selick blends and fuses stop motion, live-action, and papercraft with such ease that you hardly realize that it’s happening. This one is gorgeous, inventive, gripping, imaginative, enthralling, and I could probably think of some more nice adjectives but for brevity’s sake i’ll shut the fuck up.

OH, and the Residents did lovely job on the soundtrack!

Henry Selick would go on to direct big-budget animated films such as Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Coraline.” He also built and designed all of the undersea creatures in Wes Anderson’s “The Life Aquatic”

"Boy" -Milgrom

really impressive stop motion music video from the band Milgrom. this must have taken hours to complete, but it was all totally worth it because all of the shots are beautiful and incredibly detailed. the song is pretty rad, too. don’t know anything about the band but they sound really interesting considering this video is only about a year old.

"The Triangle" - By Priit Pärn

A surreal look at marriage, from the beautiful and fucking-totally-zany mind of Estonia’s Priit Pärn.

In “The Triangle,” Julia, a neglected wife who spends all day cooking extravagant meals for her husband, is shocked to discover a tiny, blue-clad man, named Eduardo,  in her kitchen. Upon seeing that Eduardo is completely emaciated, she offers him a ladle and he ends up finishing all of the food in the kitchen. This happens over and over and the nature of their relationship begins to change until Julia finds herself in the middle of a bizzare love triangle.

This is one of my favorite animated films.

Pärn’s style is just like F U C K

words in italics denote where a new order reference was totally intentional

"Iamb" - Alexis Battrick

A skeleton head with a muscular body and a snake-like penis stalks and then attacks a small worm creature with a toothed vagina and protractors for arms. Thematically, it’s overtly sexual and hint’s at “womb envy,” as if the skeleton head guy is jealous of the worm creature’s nurturing qualities.

I’m going to be totally honest, I don’t even know what else to say about this. This is both terrifying and brilliant and I wish I could contact the animator to see some of her other work.

"Quasi at the Quackadero" - Sally Cruikshank

Two ducks who only sort of look like ducks and their pet robot meander ‘round a coney island-esque amusement park that “exploits time travel.”

Aside from the music, my favorite part of this film is when an anthropomorphic globe rocks his chair off a cliff during a psychedelic montage.

Sally also did some work for sesame street, go buy some of her DVD’s here

"Roman is as Roman does" - Yu Sato

In this ‘09 music video for Themselve’s first single from CrownsDownPink and Blue guys wiggle their fingers around and look terrified/ teirrfying. They also sprout from each other’s apendages, apparently. All while pretty-colored cupcakes spin around on little plates.
